Artangel Open Winner, and the first director to be shortlisted for both the Grierson and Jarman Awards, the work of filmmaker, artist and cultural activist Andrea Luka Zimmerman presents tender portraits of community and solidarity. Her newest film Erase and Forget premiered at the Berlin Film Festival Panorama 2017.

Taşkafa: Stories of the Street (2013) is a film about resistance and co-existence told through the lives of the street dogs of Istanbul featuring text and readings by the late artist, novelist and poet
John Berger.

Her feature documentary Estate, a Reverie (2015), now part of the Arts Council Collection, celebrates her community’s resilience in the face of the impending demolition of their east London housing estate and the passing of the utopian promise of social housing it once offered. Filmed over seven years, Estate reveals the determination of residents, asking how we might resist being framed exclusively through class, gender, ability, disability or geography to present a spirited celebration of extraordinary everyday humanity.

Second Run are delighted to present these two important works on home video for the first time. This two-film DVD set presents the films from new digital transfers of original materials, and features a new filmed interview with Andrea Luka Zimmerman plus a 24-page booklet with text by John Berger, a new essay by award-winning author Ali Smith and writings on the films by Colin Dayan and Rosemary Bechler.

Taşkafa: Stories of the Street

"A work as profound as it is protesting"
Sukhdev Sandhu, Sight & Sound Critic’s Choice,
Best Films of 2013

"Taşkafa is that rarest of breeds, a work of poetry and praise, singing of the heightened daily joys that come from a true comradeship between species" Gareth Evans, Film curator Whitechapel Gallery, London

“Do not miss!” Sabah newspaper, Istanbul Film Festival, 2013

Estate, a Reverie

"Estate is a deeply moving portrait of a community struggling to survive in a boarded-up London public housing project, long slated for demolition. Multilayered and profound, Andrea Zimmerman’s film immerses us in a dreamlike lost-world of misfits, outcasts and survivors whom she films with love and aching tenderness. A lyrical and gripping vision of the loneliness and disempowerment that haunts life even in the world’s wealthiest cities"
Joshua Oppenheimer, director of The Act Of Killing

"Knowing the previous work of its creators, I believe this project will achieve something very significant for the times we are living in. It will remind us - and how appropriate this is for the medium of film - that, both politically and humanely, the past is not behind us, not obsolescent, but beside us and urgent" John Berger

"Poignant, and real, felt and important… a paean to survival, dignity, solidarity and community in the face of their erosion; political in a quiet but most urgent way, and personal"
Uriel Orlow

"Andrea Zimmerman's extraordinary film, Estate, a Reverie, which documents the last days of a Hackney housing estate, is both profound and original. Having herself lived on the estate for many years, her tender portrait exhibits deep feelings of community and solidarity - sentiments almost entirely missing from our contemporary political vocabulary. She has given Hackney back, at last, some of its wayward heart"
Ken Worpole

"There is a generosity of spirit at work in the film that captivates from the getgo - less a political polemic more a poetical portrait of times-fast-going. An enthralling and uplifting celebration of the resilience of humanity in flux"
Andrew Kotting
