From Gabriel Mascaro, director of the award-winning Neon Bull and The Blue Trail, recent winner of the Silver Bear at the 2025 Berlin Film Festival.

In this dystopian vision of a future Brazil, Joana lives a fervent spiritual life dedicated to the Church of Divine Love. She is a loyal bureaucrat who tries to ‘save’ struggling couples from divorce. But, in a society where a woman’s destiny is defined by motherhood, she is unable to conceive and so prays for a miracle.

Divine Love is a prescient, sexually provocative satire, exploring how political power manipulates sex and spirituality. The erotic and playful aspect to this damaged, neon-hued future society, is offset by a chilling authenticity - making a timely commentary on the conservative, fanatical and nationalist agendas currently prevalent and the choices we have to reject or succumb to them.

Divine Love is presented from a director-approved 4K transfer.
Our region-free Blu-ray also includes a filmed interview with director Gabriel Mascaro, plus a booklet with new writing on the film by Little White Lies editor David Jenkins, plus Mascaro's statement on the film and a discussion with him in print.

“[A] striking, unsettling, and deeply observant look at the grey area where sensuality, devotion, and faith intersect, with startling results” Sundance Institute

“Gorgeously shot and produced, impressively acted and with a lot of fascinating things on its mind, this is yet further proof that Mascaro is one of the most audacious and gifted filmmakers of his generation. […] an intelligent and elegant cri de coeur” Boyd Van Hoeij, The Hollywood Reporter

“Mascaro's limber, sensual sci-fi functions as an urgent cautionary allegory. [...] Mascaro is holding rather a frightening mirror (alongside a glittering mirrorball) to his country’s political present... The new age of Brazilian protest cinema begins here, and Divine Love has kicked it off in dancing shoes” Guy Lodge, Variety

“Director and visual artist Gabriel Mascaro’s third feature film is a futuristic gospel. His drama about jealousy, the fear of God, and love plays out in front of a series of impressive-looking reinforced concrete buildings that subtly reflect the science-fiction character of the story. A film that also asks what else faith can move besides mountains” Berlinale 2019

“A lush, intricate socio-political commentary that builds on the filmmaker’s inquisitive approach” Indiewire

“Divine Love might be a thoughtful critique of Brazil’s rising conservatism, but its global relevancy is also undeniable. This is a shocking, wonderfully acted and surprisingly erotic film that leaves one with more questions than answers, like any good film that dares to tackle the vastness of faith should

Tomris Laffly, RogerEbert.com

“Through his exquisite vision, Mascaro tells a curious tale of spiritual commitment, marital strife, and the blurred separation of church and state, leading to an ultimately surprising, powerful conclusion” The Film Stage
