Tsai Ming-Liang, director of the exquisite Goodbye, Dragon Inn, has emerged as one of the most profound voices in world cinema. This 2-disc Blu-ray Special Edition brings together two of his sublimely contemplative film works.
Days is Tsai Ming-Liang's meditation on solitude, delivered as a series of beautifully composed, delicately hued tableaux. The uneventful lives of two men unfold until they eventually cross paths, brought together out of loneliness and the need for intimacy.
Afternoon captures a wide-ranging and absorbing conversation between director Tsai and Lee Kang-Sheng, the actor, collaborator, friend and muse who has appeared in all of Tsai's films, as they reflect upon their lives, careers, friendship and identity.
Second Run present Days and Afternoon from director-approved HD masters. Our region-free 2-disc Blu-ray also includes interviews, Tsai Ming-Liang's short film Wandering (2021) and more - plus a Booklet featuring a new essay by writer/curator So Mayer.

“Tsai Ming-Liang has occupied a central position within the Taiwanese New Wave, and shined internationally within the realms of slow cinema and even beyond... His versatility and mastery are reflected not only in this multidisciplinary expertise but also in his capacity to investigate the very core of human passions and existence, through a magnificent aesthetic devotion” Huei-Yin Chen, Film Comment
“Tsai Ming-Liang has been among the most profound voices in world cinema over the past quarter century” Village Voice
“With Days he has made something exquisite and rare: an elegiac, autumnal work that also feels like an artistic breakthrough. It’s a tale of profound isolation and thrilling connection, alert and alive and gorgeously sensual even as every moment carries a bittersweet reminder of time’s inexorable passage” Justin Chang, LA Times
“[Days is] amongst the most beautiful, romantic engagements ever captured on film. Afternoon, also included on the disc, is the ultimate bonus feature, and sneakily also one of Tsai’s best films […] generously unpacking the nature of a muse and maker collaboration” Matt Turner, Little White Lies
“These are wonderfully complementary films, each of which demands focused attention through subtlety and slowness, but rewards it in spades.[...] These exquisitely detailed films have been exactingly presented and look magnificent”
Hannah McGill, Sight and Sound
“You have commit to its earthy dream logic. It is an extraordinary movie [...] Days is beautiful; it radiates the sort
of low-key intensity and punch-drunk wooziness that can become intoxicating” Simon Abrams, RogerEbert.com
“His most touching and personal film, Afternoon. The feature-length film gorgeously captures a ruminative conversation between Tsai and Lee Kang-Sheng... Recorded soon after Tsai first announced plans to retire from filmmaking, the film is a moment to consider his and Lee’s intertwined careers, collaboration and friendship” Tate Modern
“[Afternoon] is a must-see companion piece to Tsai’s rich
body of work” MoMA
